Bugs Might Save the World

This sounds like science fiction, but like these bionic bugs it’s creeping slowly but inexorably toward a healthier world for humans. A single organism, once mutated, could produce the same plastic or metal as an industrial plant, this while feeding on the compounds in pollution or the energy of the sun. So much for global warming, and there’s more than ozone making a comeback, there’s land and sea. A strain of algae could secrete high yields of protein, using less ground and water than crops like corn, rice, and you name it now do. So the billions more, in a decade or two, that populate and procreate will, instead of rioting, when they’re not starving, eat. Fruits and vegetables, even. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/03/magazine/craig-venters-bugs-might-save-the-world.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp
